DW 14-08 Empire of Death

 A guide to classic Who references in new Who.




Doctor Who Series 14, episode 8 in which the Doctor, Ruby and Mel survive the death of the universe.

2024 AD
  • [REAL] 2024AD is the year of broadcast of the episode and Ruby's current year.
    • [NEW] Ruby and the Doctor visited Wales in 2024 AD in "73 Yards" (Doctor Who (2005) series 14). Ruby was stuck in a different alternative timeline that started that year, because of it.
    • [NEW] The Doctor and Ruby arrived in this year in the previous episode, "The Legend of Ruby Sunday" (Doctor Who (2005) series 15).
    • [NEW] It comes before 2049, in which the Twelth Doctor, Clara and Courtney visit a moon in the events of "Kill the Moon" (Doctor Who (2005) series 9). 

Melanie "Mel" Bush
  • [OLD] Mel was a companion of the Sixth & Seventh Doctors. She appeared as a member of UNIT in "Power of the Doctor" (Doctor Who (2005) 2022 BBC Centenary Special).
    • [NEW] Her appearance in this episode continues from the previous episode, "The Legend of Ruby Sunday" (Doctor Who (2005) series 15).
    • She is not Spice Girl Mel B.


The Doctor
  • [OLD]  The Doctor is the main character of Doctor Who, classic series and new. Due to his ability to regenerate this is the "Fifteenth Doctor," although he has recently learnt there were more before the First Doctor. The Fifteenth Doctor first appeared in "The Giggle" (Doctor Who (2005) 60th Anniversary Special #3).
    • [NEW] He is the last of the Time Lords, after they were killed and turned into "CyberMasters" by the Master, prior to "The Timeless Children" (Doctor Who (2005) series 12 episode 10) and Gallifrey was destroyed in that story. The Time Lord Tecteun was disintergtated in "Survivors of the Flux" (Doctor Who (2005) series 13 (Flux) chapter 5). The Master died after a forced degeneration in "The Power of the Doctor" (Doctor Who (2005) BBC Centenary Special 2022). The Fourteenth Doctor, a version of The Doctor is still around due to a bigeneration ("The Giggle" (Doctor Who (2005) 60th Anniversary Specials)).

The Servant of Sutekh
  • [OLD] The Servant of Sutekh being in "The Pyramid of Mars" (Doctor Who (1963) season 13), who, obviously, served Sutekh, and killed people for him, saying, "I bring Sutekh's gift of death to all humanity"

Susan Triad
  • [1ST] The first appearance of this character as Susan Triad.
    • She notes her mother was a dinner lady. The Doctor and Ruby met a dinner lady with her face in "The Devil's Chord" (Doctor Who (2005) series 14).

UNIT HQ
  • [NEW] Not UNIT's first HQ, but this one first appeared in "The Giggle" (Doctor Who (2005) 60th Anniversary Special #3).

Kate Lethbridge-Stewart
  • [OTH] Kate Stewart is the current head of UNIT (see below). First appeared in the non-BBC Doctor Who spin-off Downtime and was introduced to the official series in "The Power of Three" (Doctor Who (2005) series 7). Her father was The Brigadier, a long time member of the organisation.
    • [NEW] Recruiting - In "The Power of the Doctor" (Doctor Who (2005) BBC Centenary Special) she had former companions Tegan and Ace working for her and at the end of the episode offered jobs to others, including, Melanie Bush (who appeared as a member in "The Giggle" (Doctor Who (2005) 60th Anniversary Special #3) (an episode where she also recruited Donna Noble)).


VLINX
  • [NEW] VLINX is a robot member of UNIT, who first appeared in "The Giggle" (Doctor Who (2005) 60th Anniversary Special).

Sutehk
The Death of Ages
The Typhonian Beast
  • [OLD] Sutehk was a god who appeared in "The Pyramid of Mars" (Doctor Who (1963) season 13).

The TARDIS
  • [OLD] The TARDIS is The Doctor's time and space travel vehicle.  It stands for Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space.  Like a lot of the Doctor's race's technology, it is "bigger on the inside."  The Doctor stole her second-hand TARDIS when fleeing her Gallifrey. It is an older model ("Type 40") and unreliable, often ending up in the wrong location, and being unable to blend into its environment (a feature TARDISes should have). Other Time Lords had their own TARDISes.
    • [1ST] This is the first time it's been an anagram of S. TRIAD. Well, it's always been an anagram of S. TRIAD, but this is the first time it's come up.
    • [1ST] They've never been associated with clouds of deadly god-creatures before.

Time Window
  • [IST] The first appearance of this time experiment by UNIT. Other time devices have been called Time Windows but they aren't necessarily the same type of device.


Ruby Sunday
    • [NEW] Ruby Sunday is The Doctor's new current, who first appeared in the previous episode, "The Church on Ruby Road" (Doctor Who (2005) Christmas Special 2023).
      • [NEW] In her first episode it was revealed that she had been abandoned on a church doorstep as a baby.
      • [NEW] Thinking about her birth has caused it to snow like that night on numerous occasions, starting with "The Space Babies" (Doctor Who (2005) series 14).


    Ruby's Mother
    • [NEW] Presumably Ruby's biological mother, who first appeared in "The Church on Ruby Road" (Doctor Who (2005) Christmas Special 2023) and in memories since.

    Mrs Flood

    • [NEW] Mrs Flood is Ruby's neighbour who first appeared in "The Church on Ruby Road" (Doctor Who (2005) Christmas Special 2023) and seems to be aware of the existence of TARDISes.
      • [1ST] She's always hiding herself away.
      • [1ST] She seems to be aware of the coming doom.

    Perception Filter
    • [TW] The ability of something to remain unseen by most people except in the most limited of circumstances. It was first mentioned under this name in "Everything Changes" (Torchwood series 1) and has been mentioned many times in the series.


    Carla Sunday
    • [NEW] Carla Sunday is Ruby's adopted mother.  She first appeared in "The Church on Ruby Road" (Doctor Who (2005) Christmas Special 2023).


    Cherry Sunday
    • [NEW] Ruby's grandmother, via Ruby's adoption by Carla Sunday (above). "The Church on Ruby Road" (Doctor Who (2005) Christmas Special 2023).

    The Memory TARDIS
    • [OTH] Although it was created for this episode, it first appeared in a series of framing stories created for older serials called "Tales of the TARDIS" released just prior to these episodes. It features many references to past episodes, Doctors and companions.

    1911 AD
    • [REAL] A year that appeared in the past. It has appeared previously in Doctor who, especially "The Pyramid of Mars" (Doctor Who (1963) season 13).
      • In "Stones of Blood" 
      • In Torchwood 1911 appears or is mentioned in "Out of Time" and "From Out of the Rain"
      • In "The Impossible Astronaut" () the 11th Doctor mentioned being late for a biplane (or knitting) lessons.

    • [OLD] Sarah Jane Smith was a companion to the previous doctors, who appeared in "The Pyramid of Mars" (Doctor Who (1963) season 13) and other episodes and her own spin-off.


    • [OLD]  Susan Foreman was the original companion of the First Doctor and his granddaughter.  First appeared as an unEarthly child in the first episode "(An Unearthly Child" (Doctor Who (1963) season 1 and left in "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" (Doctor Who (1963) season 2 and appeared later as an adult in the 20th Anniversary Special ("The Five Doctors").
      • [OLD] Susan claimed to have named the TARDIS.
      • [1ST] This is first reference to her possibly being a "Granddaugher before a daughter." It may mean he is not yet the father of Susan's parent in his timeline or it may just mean he doesn't become a parent until after 2024. The Doctor has mentioned having children before. 
      • [OLD] Left her and althought he promised otherwise, he never returned.
      • [OLD] This footage used is from "The Daleks" (Doctor Who (1963) season 1), a colourised version of which.

    S Triad Technology
    • [1ST] The appearance of this organisation continues from the previous episode where it first appeared.
      • It is an anagram of TARDIS Technology.

    Two Hearts
    • [OLD] The Doctor's race have two heart. This was first noted in "Spearhead in Space" (Doctor Who (1963) season 7), the Third Doctor's first story.  Previously it seemed that the First and Second Doctor only had one heart.  Since then it has usually been implied that the Doctor's race always have two hearts (with early references being retroactively regarded as goofs) although some non-televised sources claim that they have only a single heart in their first body (or the number changes), but other non-televised sources state that the First Doctor and his granddaughter Susan actually had two hearts.

    Intelligent Rope
    • [NEW] Intelligent Rope was used by the less-than-intelligent goblins in "The Church on Ruby Road" (Doctor Who (2005) Christmas Special 2023).


    Intelligent Gloves
    • [NEW] This pair of devices first appeared in  "The Church on Ruby Road" (Doctor Who (2005) Christmas Special 2023).

    73 Yards
    • [NEW] The distance the woman stayed from an suspended-timeline version of Ruby Sunday in the episode of that name ("73 Yards" (Doctor Who (2005) series 14).

    • [NEW] 2005 is the year the Doctor met Rose in "Rose" (Doctor Who (2005) series 1 episode 1).

    Venus
    • [REAL] Venus is a real planet, but you knew that.

    Telos
    • [OLD] Telos was a planet where a cybermen exited in "Tomb of the Cybermen" (Doctor Who (1963) season 5) and "Attack of the Cybermen" (Doctor Who (1963) season 22). The Twelfth Doctor mentioned as one of the differfent planets on which Cybermen originated in "The Doctor Falls" (Doctor Who (2005) series 10 episode 12). DC Comics and the Star Wars universe both also have a Telos, but this blog isn't about them. 

    Karn
    • [OLD] Karn was the home of the Sisters of Karn.
      • It first appeared in "The Brain of Morbius" (Doctor Who (1963) season 13) as the location of Morbius's defeat by the Time Lords.
      • They later appeared in "Night of the Doctor" (Doctor Who (2005) 2013 50th Anniversary minisode #1) were they helped the Eighth Doctor regenerate
      • "Prologue" (Doctor Who 2005) series 9 minisode 1) and "The Magician's Apprentice" (Doctor Who (2005) series 9 episode 1) where he gives the Sisters confession dial and Colony Sarff looks for him.

    The Ood Sphere
    • [NEW] The Ood Sphere is the planet of the Ood, it first appeared in, well, "Planet of the Ood" (Doctor Who (2005) series 4 episode 3). The Tenth Doctor visits it briefly in "The End of Time part 1" (Doctor Who (2005) 2009 Christmas Special).

    Skaro


    The Daleks
      • [OLD] The main enemy of the Doctor, first appearing in the classic series and have regularly appeared in the new series. The creation of the Daleks featured in "Genesis of the Daleks" (Doctor Who (1963) season 12) and "Destination: Skaro" (Children in Need Special 2023).
        • Mel did not meet up with them on screen but has in other adventures.

      Einstein
      • [REAL] Albert Einstein was a real person, I shouldn't have to tell you that.
        • He was one of the scientists kidnapped by The Rani in "Time and the Rani" (Doctor Who (1963) season 24).
        • He appeared in "Death is the Only Answer" part of "When Time Froze" (Doctor Who Confidential series 6 episode 12).
      2046 AD
      • [NEW] 2046AD was a year that Ruby lived through in the suspended timeline in "73 Yards" (Doctor Who (2005) series 14).

      Roger Ap Gwilliam
      • [NEW] Roger ap Gwilliams became PM in the suspended timeline lived in "73 Yards" (Doctor Who (2005) series 14). Ruby worked on his campaign.

      Vortis
      • [OLD] Vortis was the titluar web planet of "The Web Planet" (Doctor Who (1963) season 2).

      Tigella
      • [OLD] Tigella was a planet that appeared in "Meglos" (Doctor Who (1963) season 18). It is also the singluar form of tigelle, a Italian round bread, again, not relevant.

      Vox
      • [1ST] Vox is first mentioned in this episode. One of those planetts may be it. I don't know if that counts as it appearing in this episode.

      Messaline
      • [NEW] Messaline was a planet colonised by the hath and humans in "The Doctor's Daughter" (Doctor Who (2005) series 4).

      • [OLD] Calufrax was a segment of the Key to Time disguised as a planet in "The Pirate Planet" (Doctor Who (1963) season 18: "The Key to Time").
        • [NEW] Calufrax Minor was one of the planets stolen by the Daleks in "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End" (Doctor Who (2005) series 4).

      Spiridon
      • [OLD] Spiridon was used as a base of operations by the Daleks in "Planet of the Daleks" (Doctor Who (1963) season 10).

      Shan Shen
      • [NEW] Shan Shen was a planet with a marketplace as seen in "Turn Left" (Doctor Who (2005) series 4).

      Auga Santina
      • [1ST] Auga Santina is a planet that first appeared in this episode. It turns out it did actually have a name.
