A Guide to Classic Who references (and other references) including friends of the Doctor.
UNIT is an international science and military organisation created to combat threats from alien encroachment on Earth.
During the Second Doctor story, "The Web of Fear" (Season 5) a group of British infantrymen lead by Colonel Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, helped the Doctor defeat the Great Intelligence and his robot Yeti.
In The Invasion (Season 6) the second Doctor again met Lethbridge-Stewart, now a Brigadier and in charge of the UK contingent of the newly formed UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce).
Lethbridge-Stewart decided that UNIT needed a scientific division, and when the Third Doctor was exiled to Earth he offered him a job as UNIT's scientific adviser. Although he was offered money for the role, the Doctor refused, instead asked for the facilities needed to repair his TARDIS. In the Third Doctor's final season, he is assisted by Sarah Jane Smith, a reporter. These stories are variously said to be set in the 70s or in the 80s.
"Robot" (Season 12), the Fourth Doctor's first story had him continue that advisory role, but immediately left UNIT after that story. UNIT would play a role in the following season's "The Android Invasion" and "Seeds of Doom." Sarah Jane Smith appeared in all these stories.
The Fifth & Sixth Doctor did not work with UNIT, however, the Fifth Doctor did spend time with a retired Lethbridge-Stewart in "Mawdryn Undead" (Season 20). During this era, Lethbridge-Stewart attended a UNIT reunion (in the beginning of "The Five Doctors") meeting with his replace Colonel Charles Crichton (Lethbridge-Stewart then traveled with the Second Doctor and met the other Doctors.)
The Seventh Doctor worked with UNIT (under Brigadier Winifred Bambera) and with Lethbridge-Stewart who had come out of retirement in Season 26's "Battlefield."
UNIT did not appear in the Doctor Who telemovie with the Eighth Doctor.
