A guide to classic Who references in new Who.
Doctor Who Children in Need 2023 Special in which the new Doctor visits Skaro...
May contain spoilers for
"Destination: Skaro"
[OLD] - Things that first appeared in the classic series (or the film).
The following are also covered:
[1ST] - Things that first appeared in this episode.
[NEW] - Things that first appeared in the new series.
[OTH] - Things that first appeared in outside the series itself.
Previously on Doctor Who...
- [OLD] The Doctor's time and space travel vehicle. It stands for Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space. Like a lot of the Doctor's race's technology, it is "bigger on the inside." The Doctor stole his second-hand TARDIS when fleeing her Gallifrey. It is an older model ("Type 40") and unreliable, often ending up in the wrong location, and being unable to blend into its environment (a feature TARDISes should have). Other Time Lords have their own TARDISes.
Skaro |
- [OLD] The homeworld of the Daleks. First appeared in ("The Daleks" Doctor Who (1963) season 1) and featured in "Genesis of the Daleks" Doctor Who (1963) season 12 and "The Magician's Apprentice"/"The Witch's Familar" Doctor Who (2005) series 9).
- [OLD] Davros - Creator of the Daleks, Davros (Foes: Davros) first appeared in "Genesis of the Daleks" Doctor Who (1963) Season 12 and then every Dalek based story after that in the classic series making him a major foes of the Doctor. He reappeared in "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End" (Doctor Who (2005) series 4) having been rescued from the Time War by Dalek Caan. He appeared as a young boy in "The Magician's Apprentice"/"The Witch's Familar" Doctor Who (2005) series 9) where the Twelfth Doctor yelled "Exterminate" at him before saving him from a minefield. This short appears to have occured before the injuries that disfigured and crippled him.
Kaleds |
- [OLD] A human-like race that shared and warred over the planet Skaro with the Thals. Seeing that they were mutating Davros forced the mutation to its final form, removed thier emotions and built the Dalek battle tanks for them to live in.
- [OLD] Created by Davros as to help transport the mutated Kaleds that became known as the Daleks, the main enemy of the Doctor. The armour was first called the Mark III Travel Machine in "Genesis of the Daleks" Doctor Who (1963) season 12. The Daleks first appeared in the classic series and have regularly appeared in the new series. This Doctor and her companions faced a Dalek in "Resolution," "Revolution of the Daleks," and "Eve of the Daleks" (Doctor Who New Year's Day Special 2019, 2020 & 2022). They also appeared briefly in a couple of episodes of Series 13: Flux and "Power of the Doctor" (Doctor Who (2005) 2022 BBC Centenary Special).
Mult-dexterous Claw |
- [OTH] A Dalek limb that first appeared on some Daleks in the non-canon film "Doctor Who & The Daleks" (which adapted "The Daleks" Doctor Who (1963) season 1)). A Dalek in "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End" (Doctor Who (2005) series 4) had one, as did Daleks in "Resolution," "Revolution of the Daleks," and "Eve of the Daleks" (Doctor Who New Year's Day Special 2019, 2020 & 2022).
The Klade |
- [OTH] The Klade are a far future humanoid race that first appear in the novel "The Infinity Doctors" and later other novels and comics. Some sources speculate they are a further evolution of the Daleks.
- [OLD] The main character of Doctor Who, classic series and new. Born on Gallifrey, he is a Time Lord. Due to Time Lords' ability to regenerate this is the "Fourteenth Doctor."
"Old Face" |
- [NEW] The Fourteenth Doctor shares a face with the Tenth Doctor.
"Exterminate"
- [OLD] A popular Dalek catch-phrase.
"Genesis of the Daleks" |
- A reference to the title of the classic serial "Genesis of the Daleks" Doctor Who (1963) Season 12, which this is a prequel to.
Dalek Manipulator Arm |
- A common Dalek limb, appearing on most Daleks. Often mocked because it looks like a plunger it has been shown to be able to kill humans and operate Dalek machines.
