Regeneration is the ability of Time Lords to cheat death by taking on a new form.

In the classic series, the Doctor regenerated six times.  But others regenerated in classic Who:

• The Third Doctor story "Planet of the Spiders" (Season 11), in which the Doctor's mentor Time Lord K'anpo Rimpoche regenerated into Cho Je.  Cho Je had previously interacted with other character, turning out to be a project of K'anpo's inner-self.

• The Fourth Doctor story "Destiny of the Daleks" (Season 17), in which the Doctor's companion (a Time Lady) regenerated.  Romana "tried on" 4 looks before settling on the first one she tried.

• Other Time Lords appeared in different bodies in different stories, but their regenerations were not featured.

New Who.

• Characters other than the Doctor have also regenerated in New Who.
