A Guide to Classic Who references (and other references) New Who (including The Sarah Jane Adventure episodes.)

The Sarah Jane Adventures Series 2 episode 2 (Story 8 part 2) in which Sarah Jane and friends fight a clown who abducts children.

Warning: May contain Spoilers for

"The Day of the Clown Part Two"

Viewing Order:

References:

[OLD] - Things that first appeared in the classic series of Doctor Who (1963) or the movie.

For context, the following are also covered:
[1ST] -  The first appearance of things in Doctor Who and related shows.
[NEW] - Things that first appeared previously in the new series of Doctor Who (2005).
[SJA] - Things that first appeared in Sarah Jane Adventures.

Ongoing References:

  • [SJA]  Xylok - A crystalline lifeform that is central to the operation of Mr Smith.  It tried to use bring the Moon crashing into the Earth to release the rest of its race from beneath the planet's surface in "The Lost Boy Part One" and "Part Two" (The Sarah Jane Adventures series 1).
  • [SJA]  Mr Smith - Sarah Jane Smith's alien computer, first seen in the first episode "Invasion of the Bane" (Sarah Jane Adventures series 1). As noted above it is based on a Xylok, and needed to be rebooted to stop it destroying the Earth.

 Part One:
  • [SJA] Alien Clown Pied Piper Thingy - First appeared, obviously, in the first part.

Sarah Jane's Articles:
  • [NEW] "Northern Lights a Visual Delight for London" - Could be the cover up of one of a number of alien visitation over London.  The events of "The Christmas Invasion" (Doctor Who (2005) 2005 Christmas Special) seems possible, as it would explain why everyone ended up on the roof, although that was mostly during the day time.  "The Runaway Bride (Doctor Who (2005) 2006 Christmas Special) also seems possible, but again it's all speculation.

  • "The Beauty of the Beast" - Appears to have a picture of St Agnes Abbey where the Gorgon in "Eye of the Gorgon Part One" and "Part Two" (The Sarah Jane Adventures series 1) was.  The headline seems appropriate, too.

  • "Robots: the Happy Slaves of the Future" - Probably the story Sarah Jane was working on in "Robot" (Doctor Who (1963) season 12), the Fourth Doctor's first story.

  • "School Mystery Ends With Explosive Results" - The events of  "School Reunion" (Doctor Who (2005) series 2), although Sarah Jane is having a lot more school-based adventures these days.

  • "Britain's Atomic Time Bomb?" - Possibly another "Robot" (Doctor Who (1963) season 12) related story, as an important element of that episode was the fact that the UK control the US and USSR launch codes.  The UK's launch codes were in the control of the UN by the time of "World War Three" (Doctor Who (2005) series 1)  It may also have been written in response to Kaagh's attempt's to crash the Earth's satellites into nuclear stockpiles in "The Last Sontaran Part One" and "Part Two" (The Sarah Jane Adventures series 1).

This Episode:

  • [1ST] Distress beacon of a Cylethian scout ship - First mention of this race, their scout ships or this device.

  • [NEW]  The Pharos Institute - Appeared in "The Lost Boy Part One" and "Part Two" (The Sarah Jane Adventures series 1) as The Pharos Parascience Institute.  Previously, the Pharos Project appeared in the Fourth Doctor story "Logopolis" as an Earth attempt to contact alien life in the 80s, decades before the Institute opened.  It's not clear if the two are related.

  • [1ST] Vorgatt defense emitter - The first appearance on this device.
